David just wanted quiet. The incessant drone of the lawnmower next door was making his head pound. He slammed the window shut, but the noise still seeped in, a relentless intrusion. A fence? He barely cared. But he knew this meeting meant… things.

He barely looked at the email about the fence. He'd just have to be pleasant. He’d have to feign interest. The effort of it all made him want to collapse.

He could feel the familiar fatigue creeping into his bones, making it hard to take a deep breath. He longed to be left alone.
